JOB DESCRIPTION: Senior Data Scientist

Our team consists of experts across the fields of campaign strategy, political data, and analytics. The convergence of these skill sets represents what we are all about: providing the right data and analytic approach to meet the unique needs of each of our clients, while ensuring that the resulting tools and information integrate seamlessly into the overall campaign strategy.

Summary

We are looking for an experienced data scientist to help lead our growing team based in our brand new Washington, DC office. This position will have the opportunity to create models and analyze data for various high profile Democratic campaigns and progressive organizations in 2016. We work with national Democratic party committees, major progressive non-profits, candidates, and ballot campaigns all over the country. We also have a growing international political practice. This position will provide a technical leadership role within the Clarity team. An ideal candidate will be willing to commit to long hours during election season as well as understand the importance of work/life balance in between elections.

Job Functions

  • Use advanced statistical methodology and machine learning techniques to create a variety of  voter contact models.

  • Design new and more efficient tools or methods of analysis and work with the Clarity partner team on additional product offerings for the firm.

  • Responsible for running projects from creation of the survey instrument to final analysis, communicating and working in collaboration with the client throughout the process.

  • Make effective memos and presentations, provide recommendations to clients based on the results of your analysis or models.

  • Provide leadership and subject matter experience within the Analytics team.

Qualifications

  • Four or more years work experience with machine learning and statistics

  • Advanced experience using R, Stata, Python (sci-kit), or similar languages or software is a must

  • Experience with political campaigns, campaign strategy, and working with voter files

  • Experience manipulating large datasets in an efficient manner

  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, or Vertica

  • Knowledge of *NIX command line environments

  • Perl, PHP, C++ or other software development experience is a plus

  • Strong communication skills, particularly with technical subjects

  • Diplomatic, professional approach to problem solving

  • Ability to manage several tasks and projects concurrently and to prioritize work effectively

  • Must be a self-starter and willing to work long, irregular hours as needed

  • A strong commitment to progressive and charitable causes is a must

Summary

We are looking for individuals with strong programming skills to join our growing team as a PHP developer in our new Washington, DC office. A commitment to progressive causes and resourceful problem solving in a fast-paced, startup environment are required.

Job Functions

  • Work with our team on ongoing development of our current software and new poll-viewing portal.

  • Responsible for maintaining and enhancing our other web-based tools.

  • Assist with database design and some system administration.

  • Other projects may include planning and developing new software products.

Key Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent technical experience

  • 2+ years of experience with web development, preferably with PHP frameworks (Laravel, Phalcon, Cake, etc.) and JQuery

  • Strong knowledge of front-end design and development using CSS, HTML5, cross-browser functionality, and Javascript

  • Familiarity with relational databases, such as MySQL/MariaDB or PostgreSQL

• Support Senior Analysts with a variety of tasks delivering statistical analysis and modeling.

Job Functions

 

• Dig through individual-level datasets for useful insights and ideas

• Draft and field large-N polls and surveys using Clarity’s in-house tools

• Support the nitty-gritty of Clarity’s microtargeting and predictive modeling workflow

• Use mapping and plotting tools to visualize models, election projections, and other information

• Create reports and presentations on client deliverables

• Tackle anything else the analytics team decides to toss your way

Must Have

• A strong commitment to progressive causes (otherwise...well, that would be awkward)

• Excellent research, writing, and multi-tasking abilities

• Insatiable curiosity and hunger for new skills

• Attention to detail (it bothers you that only one of these bullet points ends with a period)

• Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student or a recent college grad

• Must be willing to spend the summer in the DC metro area

Awesome to Have

• Prior campaign experience

• Experience with advanced number crunching in R, Stata, or similar statistical software

• Programming experience, especially in Python or Perl

• Prior work with GIS software like ArcGIS and QGIS

• Familiarity with large databases and SQL

• Coursework in American politics, computer science, or machine learning/artificial intelligence
